Oneofusismissing Day: A Time for Healing and Remembrance

At Desert Clover Psychiatry, we understand the profound impact that loss can have on mental health. That's why we're taking a moment to recognize a special day dedicated to healing, remembrance, and shared grief: Oneofusismissing Day.

Understanding Oneofusismissing Day

Observed on July 8th, Oneofusismissing Day is a time to remember the loved ones we've lost and join others in grieving and healing from the pain. It's a day that encourages us to appreciate life as a gift and not to squander it. It's a day that reminds us that it's okay to move on, to laugh, and enjoy life, even after a tragic loss.

The Stages of Grief: An Educational Insight

Grief is a natural response to loss. It's the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness.

The stages of grief, as proposed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book "On Death and Dying," are well known and include:

  1. Denial: This is a common defense mechanism that buffers the immediate shock of the loss. We block out the words and hide from the facts as a way to cope with the overwhelming pain.

  2. Anger: As the masking effects of denial begin to wear, reality and its pain re-emerge. We may feel frustrated and helpless which can lead to anger. We might direct it towards other people, a higher power, or life in general.

  3. Bargaining: During this stage, we dwell on what we could've done to prevent the loss. Common thoughts are "If only..." and "What if..." We may also try to strike a deal with a higher power.

  4. Depression: This stage is characterized by sadness and regret. We may feel overwhelmed, hopeless, and helpless. We may feel that life is meaningless and there's no point in going on.

  5. Acceptance: This is not a period of happiness, but rather acceptance. We accept the reality of the loss, and although we're still sad, we start to move on with our life2.

It's important to understand that these stages are not linear and some people may not experience all of them. Grief is a highly individual and unique process, and it doesn't look the same for everyone.
